But then I got an iPad. I quickly discovered that watching BBC Natural History programmes on the player app is far better than watching the programme on TV or on iPlayer on computer. The resolution of the iPad screen is so good; there is no awkward toolbar; and you can curl up with the magic tablet on your lap.
The next stage was the revelation of YouTube. I love YouTube for its rare footage of concerts I would love to have gone to: it’s a treasury of great jazz. One of the best is a Belgian TV performance of Wes Montgomery informally jamming, teaching a pianist the chords. This is a master class of the highest order and all there in clear black and white with good sound.
No doubt there are other delights still to be discovered.
